Techonomy, one of the companies under Clarim Media, has a yearly conference towards the end of the year that is their largest event. For this event, we worked alongside a design firm to help execute on this large project. With the guidance of the CEO, I developed an initial design language that included a gradient color pallette, as well as a texture in the form of a stylized topographical map. They ran with this and expanded upon it to complete the deliverables we needed such as badges, signage, stage backdrop, and the printed agenda.
To take some of the work off their plate, I was asked to design a graphic to put on the t-shirt we intended to give away as a gift to attendees. I started to do some design research on things that incorporated topography and contour maps into their designs. From there I created three initial designs using the event’s design language and my research as a starting point.
The first design used a stack of thin straight lines that were lifted at certain points. When seen from a distance it would give the illusion of the TE22 logo being a raised 3D form. I then tried a design where the TE22 logo would be completely surround by topographical map elements, as if the negative space between these land masses created the logo. And finally a design where a contour map was included inside the TE22 logo, with outlines of the logo radiating outward and filling in the negative space between the elements of the logo.
It was decided the third option had the most potential, so I continued to develop it’s design. Instead of having the radiating outlines all be the same weight, I decreased the line weight by 2pts each step away from the center until it reached zero, and then deleted the remaining outlines. This got rid of the clutter in between the elements of the logo, as well as making it seem as if the logo was glowing when viewed from a distance.
I’m extremely happy with how this design came out, and the final printed result. I got great feedback from my superiors as well as many speakers and attendees.
